Chana Masala is one of the most popular street foods and home-cooked dishes across North India, and at The Mango Tree in Medicine Hat, we prepare it the traditional way — with whole chickpeas simmered in a tangy, spice-forward tomato gravy that is built from scratch. The key to great Chana Masala is the spice blend: dried mango powder (amchur) for tartness, chaat masala for complexity, and a base of cumin, coriander, and Kashmiri chili that provides colour and warmth without excessive heat.
Our Chana Masala is naturally vegan and gluten-free, making it an excellent choice for guests with dietary restrictions as well as anyone who simply loves bold, honest flavours. The chickpeas are hearty and satisfying, making this a complete meal when served with our freshly baked naan or basmati rice. It is a dish that represents Indian cuisine at its most accessible and delicious, and it is one of the most reordered vegetarian dishes at our restaurant.
